This is the UFC 321 live blog for Tom Aspinall vs. Ciryl Gane, the heavyweight championship main event Saturday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Aspinall (15-3), the heavyweight champion and No. 7 fighter
in the MMA Fighting Pound-for-Pound Rankings, defends as undisputed titleholder for the first time. He won an interim title at UFC 304, but was unable to secure a unification bout with Jon Jones due to Jones’s delayed clash with Stipe Miocic. In Jones’s absence, Aspinall defended the interim title once, avenging a loss to Curtis Blaydes, but the matchup with Jones never materialized and Jones later retired this past June.
Now, Aspinall and the rest of the heavyweight division look to move on.
Gane (13-2) has twice had the chance to compete for undisputed gold, including a unification bout with Francis Ngannou in January 2022. Unfortunately for Gane, he lost a decision to Ngannou, and then in his second opportunity for Ngannou’s vacant title, he was submitted in the first round by Jones. Gane has bounced back with consecutive wins, including a controversial split nod over Alexander Volkov, and now has the chance to spoil Aspinall’s coronation.
