King Green was once again passed over for a performance bonus at UFC 328, but that doesn’t mean the tough-as-nails lightweight walked away from New Jersey empty handed.
Green is now on a three fight win streak after boxing up and tapping out Jeremy Stephens in the opening bout of last weekend’s main card. His rear-naked choke on Stephens wasn’t really spectacular enough to merit a $100,000 bonus, but there was some hope that he’d get one on account of being screwed after KOing Daniel Zellhuber in February.
Alas, not even an impassioned speech directed at Dana White and Hunter Campbell could land him the $100k, even though he technically followed the new unspoken rule where begging for a bonus actually hurts your chances of getting one. He’ll have to be satisfied with his win money, the $25k finish bonus, and 30% of Stephens’ purse after “Lil Heathen” missed weight by four pounds. Plus … his own custom shorts?
“Well, we we talked about it, [we] looked at the opponents and who they fought,” White said of Green getting a bonus. “But Bobby Green is gonna get his own — he’s been wanting his own shorts, so he’s getting them. We’re making sure he gets his own shorts.”
Green has said in the past that he’s hellbent on wearing similar stars-and-stripes shorts as Apollo Creed wore in the Rocky movies. They’re cool shorts, but they’re not $100,000 cool. Especially after hearing Green’s story about $300,000 worth of jewelry getting stolen. King said he’d be pushing for a quick turnaround to recoup more of those losses, and less than two days after his last fight it sounds like he’s just waiting on the paperwork for the next one.
“I think I might have a fight soon,” Green wrote on Instagram Stories. “I told you I tell no lies.”
