Goalkeeper Max Schmitt has risen through the ranks at Bayern Munich, boasting the rare accomplishment of being both U-17 European and World Champion with Germany, and spent the 2024/25 season as the U-23’s main goalkeeper in the Regionalliga Bayern, the fourth division of German football. In the 2025/26, he made the jump to the 3. Liga to play on loan for SSV Ulm, appearing in 11 matches as they were relegated.
This was enough to secure him a permanent move to SSV Jahn Regensburg, who were relegated
from the 2. Bundesliga in the 2025/26 season. Die Rothosen announced the transfer via their website:
SSV Jahn Regensburg has completed its goalkeeping team with the signing of Max Schmitt. The 20-year-old joins from FC Bayern Munich. The goalkeeper most recently played for SSV Ulm 1846 and has now signed a contract in the Upper Palatinate region until June 30, 2028.
The goalkeeping trio for the upcoming 2026/27 third division season is complete. Last week, HSV loanee Hannes Herrmann joined SSV Jahn Regensburg, joining Alexander Weidinger. Now, Max Schmitt has been signed as the second goalkeeper. The Munich native has signed a two-year contract. Sporting director Alexander Schmalhofer commented on the transfer:
“Despite his young age, Max has already gained valuable experience at the professional level. He has played for several youth national teams, celebrated great successes there, and received excellent training at FC Bayern Munich. Max definitely has the potential to take the next step in his career in Regensburg. Therefore, we are very pleased that we were able to convince Max to join Jahn Regensburg.”
Bayern released an announcement of their own on their website:
Goalkeeper Max Schmitt is leaving FC Bayern Munich and joining third-division side SSV Jahn Regensburg. The young keeper moved from the youth academy of TSV Milbertshofen to the Bayern campus nine years ago and has since progressed through all of the Munich club’s youth teams. The U17 World and European Champion has made 25 appearances for the reserves. Last season, the 20-year-old was on loan to partner club SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball, where he played 14 matches across all competitions. Now, the move to the Upper Palatinate region marks the next step in his career.
Schmitt needed a move away from Bayern to establish himself full time in another team. The announcement hardly seems to announce Schmitt as the regular starter, but he has the talent to become an important member of the squad.
