According to a report from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, MLS club San Jose Earthquakes is in the mix for RB Leipzig attacker Timo Werner:
🚨🇺🇸 San Jose Earthquakes have entered the race
for Timo #Werner. Talks have taken place.
Werner and his agents have also held talks with Inter Miami over a possible January move. The Earthquakes are currently the more concrete option.
His contract with RB Leipzig runs until 2026. One to watch.
Werner was previously linked to Inter Miami, but now former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is on the radar of Lionel Messi’s club.
For Werner, a move to MLS is basically the “Last Chance U” for his career. RB Leipzig does not want him, he has barely played for months, and his marketability is at an all-time low. There were hopes that he would be able to catch on with a club in the Bundesliga, but nothing has emerged.
Now, it appears as if it is MLS or bust.
However, there is some thought that Werner could just simply wait out his contract situation as well. Kicker (via Get German Football News) reported as much:
Kicker reports that – despite a plethora of reports linking him with a move to America’s MLS – RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner may be preparing to simply ride out his current Bundesliga contract. The 29-year-old evidently sees no reason to forfeit six months worth of his current salary in order to make a move in January. Leipzig themselves may also find little reason to collect a pittance on the current €5m-valued attacker.
In addition, Fabrizio Romano says that a move to Inter Miami is probably not in the works for Werner:
🚨🇺🇸 Timo Werner could end up in MLS in January with clubs interested in the German striker.
But among those clubs, no talks taking place with Inter Miami as their priority is new deal for Luis Suárez. ❌
So…stay tuned.
