Over the past two offseasons, the Wisconsin Badgers have seen quite the number of people in and out of their program as they look to build in the transfer portal. The priority of targeting older, ready-now players has sometimes led to younger guys looking for more playing time elsewhere.
We saw that this offseason with Jack Robison and Riccardo Greppi, whom Greg Gard said would look to transfer down for an opportunity to play. Last year, it was former four-star guard Daniel Freitag, who was also a part
of Wisconsin’s 2024 recruiting class, as he left after one year to transfer to Buffalo.
Well, Freitag broke out as a sophomore in 2025-26, averaging 19.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists for the Bulls, while shooting 41.1 percent from the field and 36.1 percent from three. The combo guard dealt with an injury, though, that caused him to miss the end of the season, and elected to enter the transfer portal again ahead of his junior season.
Now, he’s got his next destination: the Oregon State Beavers, playing for new head coach Justin Joyner, who was an assistant with the Michigan Wolverines last season. Oregon State has been quite busy in the transfer portal, landing quite the haul so far. They’ve gotten commitments from BYU freshman center Xavion Staton, Grand Canyon (and former Louisville five-star) center Dennis Evans, San Francisco guard Legend Smiley, Freitag, Idaho forward Jackson Rasmussen, and Fresno State forward Deshawn Gory.
Freitag is considered a four-star transfer prospect by 247Sports and had seen interest from schools in the Big Ten before committing to Oregon State.
There, he’ll have a good chance to grow off his sophomore season as a lead guard for the Beavers in what should be an exciting team in the West Coast Conference next year.
