On Thursday Night Football last night (Oct. 29), the Green Bay Packers’ Christian Watson was taken to the hospital after suffering a chest injury in the first half of the Packers home game against the Carolina Panthers.
Watson was said to be coughing up blood in the locker room, which meant a trip to the hospital*.
But after halftime… is that #9’s music?!?!?
Much to the delight of the Lambeau Field crowd who were already celebrating a Green Bay lead and the Milwaukee Brewers’ World Series title, Watson even got back into the game.
After the game, Watson confirmed that he was spitting up blood, but tests didn’t show any internal bleeding (“only” a fractured rib). He wanted to get back out there, and the medical team said okay.
Online, many were making references to WWE and pro wrestling angles…
One of those involved a young Paul E. Dangerously getting his client Rick Rude a WCW United States title shot against an injured Sting. The future Icon would have had to forfeit the belt if he didn’t face Rude at Clash of Champions 17, so he showed up in an ambulance for the match. Unlike Watson, the Stinger lost back in 1991.
Dangerously has long been known as Paul Heyman, but under any name he wouldn’t miss a chance to plug his son Jacob’s new YouTube show by commenting on Watson’s viral moment. He made sure to give his comment some extra juice by mentioning the conspiracy theory about the NFL being scripted…
We did this with @Sting in 1991 in WCW (vs Ravishing Rick Rude), and the industry has repeated it with great success in numerous circumstances. My most sincere compliments to the @NFL‘s creative team. Nicely done!
PS – Have you checked out The Roundtable? Over 1,000,000 verified views just on @YouTube and growing STRONG. You didn’t think I’d have your attention for the moment and not promote this magnificent discussion?
Anyway. I digress.
I love football. Even though it’s pre-determined.
That’s our Paul Heyman, working angles and hustling for over 40 years.
* I know for a fact there are pro wrestling fans among the football media, so I’m really disappointed in the lack of “medical facility” jokes made during and after this dramatic moment.
