Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has agreed a season-long loan deal with Turkish side Trabzonspor, securing a move away from Old Trafford for at least the 2025/26 campaign, per Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.
The club has reportedly been exploring options to move on from the Cameroonian keeper all summer, with Altay Bayindir starting all three Premier League matches so far and a deadline move for Belgian keeper Senne Lammens pushed over the line by the deteriorating situation between the sticks.
Onana joined United in the summer of 2023, replacing longtime club servant David De Gea. He struggled to live up to the Spaniard’s legacy, and his mistakes proved costly in an ill-fated UEFA Champions League group stage campaign. He kept his job going into year two and didn’t prove much better. After another mistake in the UEFA Europa League Final in 2025, Onana was dropped entirely from the matchday squad for United’s season finale at home against Aston Villa.
His final appearance for the club was in United’s embarrassing defeat away to Grimsby Town in the second round of the EFL Cup in August. Onana was weak at his near post for the first goal, weak attacking a corner on the second goal, and weak on several penalties during the shootout loss to the League Two side.
United now have Lammens, Bayindir and Tom Heaton on the books, with Lammens expected to compete for a starting role considering that Bayindir has been dreadful as well. It’s not an ideal situation for any goalkeeper however, as United have been leaking goals regardless of who is in net.
