at the Quodos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. Alexander Volkanovski (27-4) and Diego Lopes (27-7) squared off in the main event clash. The fight aired live on Paramount+.

Round 1
Marc Goddard the third man in the cage for the main event.
They’re working to establish the range. Volkanovski circling, not letting Lopes cut off the cage. Step-in body kick from Lopes. Inside leg kick from Volkanovski. Quick takedown from Volkanovski, Lopes blocks it and hits a counter right. Sneaky right from Volkanovski. Looping left from Volkanovski scores. They’re showing each other plenty of respect, not overcommitting to any follow-ups.
Another inside leg kick from Volkanovski lands. He’s content to chop away at Lopes. Jab lands for Volkanovski. He gets deep on a takedown and looks for a trip, Lopes with a solid base. Little shots inside by Volkanovski as he pushes Lopes against the fence. Lopes out of there with less than a minute to go.
Counter right by Volkanovski, then a jab. He presses forward with a jab and Lopes smiles. Solid start for the champ.

Round 2
Volkanovski circling, he’s letting Lopes come to him. Right hand from Volkanovski scores, followed by a leg kick. Another inside leg kick lands as Lopes advances. There’s a hard low kick from Lopes. Poking jab from Volkanovski as he keeps Lopes guessing. Lopes with a right hand that puts Volkanovski on the defensive. Flurry from Lopes, but Volkanovski evades. Right hand down the middle by Lopes, then a solid leg kick.
Uppercut from Lopes, Volkanovski counters with a left hand. Volkanovski inside with a 1-2, he lets his hands go and Lopes trades with him. Volkanovski lets a right hand fly and connects. The speed of Volkanovski is so impressive even at this stage of his career. Left hook, right hand by Volkanovski. He’s landing more.
Lopes with a late takedown attempt. Volkanovski jumps the gilly. Dustin Poirier would be proud. Lopes breaks it and just falls on top of him. He attacks Volkanovski’s back but there’s no time for a finish.

Round 3
Lopes is smiling, not sure if he thinks he’s up on the cards? It has been close.
Lopes with a glancing right. He jabs Volkanovski’s body. Leg kick from Lopes, Volkanovski answers with a quick jab. Short 1-2 from Volkanovski allows him to take some space. Game of inches right now. Right across the chin scores for the champion. Lopes breaks up a clinch with a high elbow. Volkanovski jabs as he takes a step back. Clean right hand for Volkanovski, then another one, Lopes pays the price for taking a risk. Lopes has to defend as Volkanovski wrestles with him.
Volkanovski throws another accurate right. Lopes needs to wake up here. Glance up at the clock from Volkanovski, less than two minutes left before the championship rounds. Both fighters keeping their distance. Volkanovski with a right, but Lopes lands a counter that drops Volkanovski to a knee. Immediate recovery, does that steal the round for Lopes? Not quite on my card, but we have intrigue heading into Round 4.

Round 4
Volkanovski’s corner was telling him he slipped, but replays clearly show that was a knockdown for Lopes.
The champ staying busy with the jab. Inside leg kick from Lopes. He scores with a body kick. Counter right from Volkanovski scores. Lopes just can’t see that shot coming. Right down the middle from Volkanovski. At the desk, Daniel Cormier describes it as a delayed right hand and that could be what’s throwing Lopes off.
Another zinging right by Volkanovski scores. Left hook from Volkanovski. Lopes is working to make things happen, but he’s getting the worst of these exchanges. Right hand gets through for Lopes. Jab on the nose by Volkanovski. Less than two minutes to go and neither fighter is running away with it.
Loud “Volkanovski!” chant. Volkanovski with another counter right. And there’s a low blow off a Volkanovski kick. Unfortunate.
Brief break and they’re back at it with about a minute remaining. Volkanovski not biting on any of Lopes’ power shots. Jab from Volkanovski. Lopes rushes in with a left and solidly connects, but Volkanovski responds with a hard shot. Good scrap.

Round 5
Volkanovski staying evasive, he has to know he’s up on the cards. Takedown by Volkanovski, but Lopes immediately counters with a guillotine and Volkanovski has to get out of there. Nice knee by Lopes on the separation. Counter punch by Volkanovski into a takedown and he wants to attack Lopes’ back. Great grappling defense by Lopes. Volkanovski not giving up as he powers Lopes to the fence. Lopes with an underhook, then a bodylock to reverse position. Big takedown for Lopes as he goes for Volkanovski’s back. They’re scrambling and rolling, battle of wills.
Volkanovski carrying Lopes and he’s almost slipped him off. The back control is stopped, Lopes shoots in for another takedown. Grappling against the fence with under two minutes remaining. Volkanovski reverses position. He is in position to win the decision.
Kimura attempt by Lopes as Volkanovski takes him down. Lopes going for an armbar now. He’s not settling for a loss on points, he still thinks he can do this. Volkanovski stacking him up and then he slips free. Volkanovski sitting on Lopes now, the champion pumps his fist to the crowd. There’s not a lot Lopes can do here with their bodies by the fence. Volkanovski turns into Lopes’ guard to throw a few punches and put an exclamation point on his performance. And still.
