Atletico San Luis surprised Pumas by a 3-2 score at home and rose out of the bottom three spots in Liga Mx. San Luis took advantage of another disastrous performance from Pumas at home, as they continue to be the opposite of their great Clausura 2026 where they finished in second place. Atletico San Luis will host Santos Laguna when Liga MX returns to action in two weeks while Pumas will have a very tough home match against Cruz Azul in a repeat of the Clausura 2026 final.
The 1st half started with
Pumas having the return of Cesar Huerta to the starting 11. After finding the ball in the area, Angel Azuaje got off a right footed shot that bounced off San Luis’ goalkeeper, Gibran Lajud. A longball into the area had Azuaje fail to get to the ball and kick Felipe Mora as he tried to get to the ball. After going to VAR, the referee gave San Luis a Penalty Kick. Sebastien Salles-Lamonge stepped up and took the PK, where he got off a right footed shot past Pumas’ goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, to give San Luis the 1-0 lead. Off a counter, Rafael Llorente got the ball in the area and send his right footed shot into the stands. Off a run into the area, Luciano Herrera got off a left footed shot that went wide. After a foul, there was a scuffle between Huerta and Oscar Macias that ended with both of them getting Yellow cards. A right footed shot from outside the area by Huerta forced a great save from Lajud. A cross into the area almost was headed in before Benjamin Galindo Jr could clear the ball. The halftime whistle blew and San Luis had the lead after another poor half from Pumas at home.
The 2nd half started with no substitutions from either side. A good run from Uriel Antuna ended with a cross that was barely cleared by San Luis’ defense. A cross from Huerta turned into a shot that forced a save from Lajud. Herrera got off a left footed shot in the area that was saved by Lajud. Rodrigo Lopez got off a great right footed shot from outside the area that went past Lajud to score a marvelous goal that tied the match at 1-1. San Luis would respond with David Rodriguez getting off a left footed shot from outside the area that would incredibly go thru the arms of Navas and into the net to give San Luis the 2-1. It was a strong shot but Navas should have saved it and it was a mistake from him. A cross into the area was volleyed by Huerta but deflected wide. Pumas subbed out injured Israel Luna for Kleber Carranza. San Luis subbed out Felipe Mora for Leonardo Flores. Pumas subbed out Pablo Bennevendo for Alan Medina. Off a counter, Rodriguez got off a right footed shot in that was brilliantly saved by Navas. The rebound fell to Rodriguez but his shot was cleared off the line by Nathan. From outside the area, Anderson Duarte got off a left footed shot that went wide. Off a corner kick, Herrrera was judged to have pulled down and after going to VAR, a PK was given to San Luis. Sebastien Salles-Lamonge took the PK and got off another right footed shot past Navas to give him his second goal of the game and San Luis the 3-1 lead. Atletico San Luis subbed out David Rodriguez and Rafael Llorente for Sebastian Perez Bouquet and Roberto Meraz. Off a counter, the ball would fall to Flores,whose shot was blocked by Navas. The rebound fell to Perez Bouquet but his shot was saved by Navas. Pumas subbed out Rodrigo Lopez for Antonio Leone. Off a free kick, Huerta got off a right footed shot that Lajud easily saved. San Luis subbed out Sebastien Salles-Lamonge and Anderson Duarte for Benjamin Galdames and Johan Caicedo. The referee would be called by VAR and the same play of pulling down a player off a set piece would be called against San Luis and Pumas got a PK. Juninho stepped up to take the Pk and got off a right footed shot past Lajud to score and place the match at 3-2. A wide open Galdames sent his right footed shot well wide. A cross into the area was scored by Juninho but the goal was ruled to be offside and called off. It was the last chance and San Luis had a great result over a disastrous Pumas.
Pumas Apertura 2026 continuous in a downward spiral. Pumas under new coach Esteban Solari continue to struggle especially at home and keep dropping key points. At home against Atletico San Luis was a must win match and yet they had a terrible performance in the 1st half and although they improved in the 2nd, it wasn’t enough. It was a bad result as Pumas’ schedule will become considerably harder, meaning the season might be lost already. Atletico San Luis got a key result although they are still far from the Liguilla with the same number of points as Pumas. They will have a must win match when they return to Liga MX action as they host Santos Laguna. Meanwhile Pumas will face their city rival in Cruz Azul, in an very tough match which is made worse by being the rematch of the Clausura 2026 final in which they lost to Cruz Azul at home.
