Javonte Williams is the featured back for the Cowboys, and after a wildly successful 2025 season, the franchise rewarded him with a new three-year deal. Williams had 287 touches during the 2025 NFL season, which was his career high by a significant margin.
But there is no doubt that he wore down as the season went on. Williams averaged 81.5 rushing yards per game in the first 11 games and notched
5.0 yards per rush. But his yardage total dropped to 61 yards per game and 4.3 yards per carry over the final five contests.
Part of the reason for the drop in production was that he was just playing too many snaps. Williams played 769 snaps during the 2025 season, which was nearly 200 more than his previous career high (574 in 2024). He was on the field for nearly every third down and took a lot of damage (and dealt a bunch, too) as a pass blocker.
The Cowboys have to find a way to limit the snaps for Williams in 2026, and carving out a role for Jaydon Blue could do that. Does that mean that Blue will become the Jahmyr Gibbs to Williams’ David Montgomery? Of course not. But there is another comparison that does make more sense.

Instead of leaving the tag unsigned and withholding his services from practices, Pickens signed and reported to work for the mandatory portion of offseason activities. Not only that but he came in with good attitude and a commitment to work. As reported by Jon Machota during the final day minicamp, Dak Prescott seems impressed by all things Pickens right now.Expert NFL picks:
“That guy makes it easy,” Prescott said of Pickens. “You see us just in routes on air out there, but you just go turn on the tape, that guy is going to get separation. He’s just different. He understands his leverage. He understands his routes. He understands where I’m looking for him at the catch point, the depth…we can go throw a lot of touchdowns right now. That guy’s ready.”
A focused and driven Pickens should strike fear in the hearts of opponents. Pickens’ presence took the Cowboys offense to new heights in 2025. It stands to reason if everyone can stay healthy the bar can rise even higher in 2026.
“It’s great,” Prescott said of Pickens’ presence. “You feel his energy. You feel his presence. It’s in the locker room. Obviously, it’s out there on the football field. Everything felt good. He looks great. I know he’s going to be ready for (training) camp.”

Drew Shelton, OT
There was a recent announcement from head coach Brian Schottenheimer that turned plenty of heads. He stated that the left tackle position would be open for competition this offseason with Tyler Guyton and Nate Thomas squaring off.
By the end of minicamp, Thomas no longer seemed to be the top choice for the LT2 spot. Instead, rookie Drew Shelton was working behind Guyton while Thomas backed up Terence Steele on the right side. That’s a major leap for the rookie, who will enter training camp on a high note.
Ryan Flournoy, WR
With George Pickens missing voluntary OTAs, he wasn’t thrust into a major role during minicamp. That opened the door for Ryan Flournoy, who is coming off a breakout sophomore campaign. Flournoy picked up where he left off in 2025 and has been playing well enough that there’s talk about him being the future WR2.

What Would a George Pickens Trade Look Like?
Cowboys Receive: 2027 1st-Round Pick, 2028 5th-Round Pick, WR Jack Bech
Raiders Receive: WR George Pickens
Projecting a trade this far out is, of course, incredibly difficult. However, if we say Pickens has a similar season in terms of success this year, we can have an idea of the compensation range that he’d bring in.
This kind of package in a deal with the Raiders is around what you’d see, and in terms of the match for the move, I think Vegas makes sense.
If they stack some more wins and like what they see from Fernando Mendoza in 2026 (assuming he plays), but don’t have a top receiver emerge, they could absolutely take a big swing on a superstar like Pickens at the position.
For Dallas, they’d likely net a first-round pick, another mid-rounder, and a player they like at the wide receiver position. Bech is young, under team control through 2028, and visited the Cowboys as a draft prospect in 2025.
Plus, he made his name in Texas as a TCU Hornfrog, and he’s represented by Dak Prescott’s agent, Todd France.
