A linebacker stopped by Gillette Stadium following the bye week.
The New England Patriots had rookie Eugene Asante in for a workout on Tuesday, according to the NFL transaction wire.
Asante, 24, entered
the league as an undrafted free agent in the spring. The 6-foot-1, 216-pound off-ball linebacker spent training camp with the Miami Dolphins and reached an injury settlement after suffering an ankle injury in the August finale.
Across a combined 91 snaps between defense and special teams, Asante’s first preseason featured 10 tackles, including one for loss as well as one pass deflection. He signed to the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns in October and was released last week.
A former transfer from North Carolina to Auburn, Asante’s collegiate run dated back to 2019. From the Tar Heels to the Tigers, he appeared in 65 games, starting 23, while having a hand in 196 tackles and 7.5 sacks. One forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a 67-yard touchdown return were accrued along the way.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, Asante ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds with a 10-yard split of 1.52 seconds. He added 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.
Standing with an 11-2 record, head coach Mike Vrabel’s 53-man roster and 17-man practice squad stand at capacity as the chance to clinch the AFC East nears.
The Buffalo Bills visit Foxborough for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff on Sunday.
