The New England Patriots have traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, putting an end to an offseason full of rumors. The fourth-year man is headed to the Houston Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft selection.

Patriots’ Kayshon Boutte trade to Texans, graded
Bernd Buchmasser: Boutte not making it to the end of his rookie contract with the Patriots seemed like a realistic possibility for a while now, and trading him at this point in time makes sense as well. That said, the return does look a bit
underwhelming and is probably not what fans had in mind. On the other hand, Reed is an interesting if somewhat unproven prospect who is a good athlete and versatile player in the safety room. He should be an upgrade over Dell Pettus and possibly get a shot at a starting role — one Boutte would not have had in a crowded receiver room — next season. | Grade: C+
Matt St. Jean: Kayshon Boutte had big moments in New England, but the writing was on the wall about his future with the team with the additions of Romeo Doubs and A.J. Brown this offseason. Getting both a young player and a pick of any kind is a great return for a player who was likely going to be a depth receiver for one season before departing in free agency, and Kyle Williams playing the way he has in the preseason makes it a lot easier to pull the trigger on a move like this. Jaylen Reed was seen as a borderline top-150 prospect in the 2025 class, and the Patriots badly needed to bolster their depth up the middle on defense. Reed is a versatile player who fits well alongside Byard and Woodson and who allows the defense to play a variety of three-safety looks, and having him under contract for three more seasons makes him a possible starter in 2027 with Byard on a one-year deal. The 2028 seventh is a nice added sweetener as well. | Grade: A
Pat Lane: The Patriots probably needed to move on from Boutte, but I don’t love the return here. In desperate need of linebacker and edge depth help, and they trade for a safety, when they have someone who has played extremely well in camp in John Saunders Jr. Maybe Reed comes in and helps out, but I don’t have high hopes. I’m also extremely concerned that the Patriots are going to see the Texans in the playoffs and this trade might come back to haunt them. I hope I’m wrong, but I was hoping they’d get more for Boutte. | Grade: C-
Andrew Guindon: Drake Maye established strong chemistry with Kayshon Boutte as a downfield target. Maye had a 143.8 passer rating when targeting Boutte last season, and the pair connected on 12 of 20 deep targets during the regular season, totaling six touchdowns and 340 yards. Jaylen Reed is a fine developmental piece, especially with the recent injury to Craig Woodson, but that may come at the expense of the growth seen from John Saunders Jr. this offseason. If Boutte’s trade value in terms of draft capital was that low, it might’ve been better to hold onto him. That said, however, the receiver room grew crowded, and this should help Kyle Williams see more opportunities. | Grade: C+
