Newcastle United are working on a major January move for FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres after Fichajes reporter Raul Cabrera Jimenez detailed the club’s intent to submit a €75million bid and a substantial salary package for the former Premier League player.
Cabrera Jimenez reported that “FC Barcelona is experiencing intense days in the transfer market after Newcastle United showed their firm desire to complete the signing of Ferran Torres with a huge offer of 75 million.”
According to the reporter,
things escalated following Manchester United and Chelsea submitting £60million offers for Harvey Barnes.
Newcastle’s response, Cabrera Jimenez wrote, was “an even bigger offer to demonstrate their strength in the transfer market.”
According to the report, Barcelona were “surprised” by the scale of Newcastle’s proposal, which Cabrera Jimenez described as “one of the highest in this transfer window.” The reporter emphasised Torres’ strong form with nine goals and one assist in 17 games before Tuesday’s game, as a key driver of the interest from several clubs.
Cabrera Jimenez further wrote that Newcastle intend to make Torres “one of the highest-paid players in the squad, offering him a salary of £13.5 million per season,” highlighting the ambition to secure a “game-changing player who will make a real difference from the moment he arrives.”
The report also outlined Barcelona’s dilemma. Cabrera Jimenez noted that “the club needs revenue, but it also wants to keep the players who are performing well. And Ferran Torres is one of them.”
Despite earlier insistence from Barcelona that Torres was not for sale, with NUFC already approaching the Catalans in the past, the reporter stated FCB must now weigh a major financial offer against the player’s renewed importance under Hansi Flick.
Cabrera Jimenez provided a timeline, writing that “the next few weeks will be crucial,” with Newcastle determined to push for a signing that would “allow them to move forward and compete at the top of the league.”
