You don’t have to listen all that closely to hear trash talk in the NFL, NHL, or NBA.
Quite often, the mics near the playing surface can pick up quite a bit of the noise being made by the players. In football,
though, well, you do not get quite the same up-close-and-personal experience.
However, Bayern Munich center-back Dayot Upamecano wants to assure you that it is there and says the goal for him is to not allow it to distract him.
“Of course, there are many. Some even abuse it, insulting you to see if you’ll lose focus. But you have to stay focused,” Upamecano told L’Equipe (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
A great set of follow-up questions would have been:
“Who are the biggest smack talkers in the Bundesliga?”
“What’s the best line anyone ever dropped on you personally?”
“What the funniest thing you ever heard on the pitch?”
It is not just other players you have to worry about, but fans as well. This clip isn’t player-on-player trash talk, but this is the kind of stuff that players have to deal with from fans.
It is amazing that there has not been a sequel to the “Malice in the Palace.”
