Just a few days after coming up short against Jake Paul in a boxing match a couple of months ago, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was arrested by ICE for outstanding warrants for allegations of organized crime and ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. Now, the son of former pound-for-pound great, Julio Cesar Chavez. Sr., is in a Mexican prison.
Per a report by ESPN, Chavez Jr. was deported to Mexico yesterday and was locked up in a prison in Sonora, Mexico, which was confirmed by Mexico’s
President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“I understand he was deported. I don’t know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was arriving in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said.
Chavez Jr. is facing a multitude of felony charges, which includes alleged illegal arms dealing and drug trafficking, which stem from supposed ties to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, the multi-billion dollar crime syndicate that rose to fame under the leadership of Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman, who was imprisoned in 2017.
Per a recent report, it was revealed that Chavez Jr. was an alleged “henchman” for the cartel, and would use humans as real life body bags to discipline them.
Despite a troubled past, Chavez Jr. (39) had success in the boxing ring, winning the WBC Middleweight title in 2011 before coughing it up to Sergio Martinez a year later after three defenses, which was the first loss of his pro career after starting off with an amazing 46-0-1 run. Chavez Jr. eventually would cross paths with Canelo Alvarez, and eventually lost a unanimous decision. With his most recent loss to Paul, Chavez Jr. dropped to 54-7-1 with 34 knockouts.
The Mexican-born pugilist has had various ups and downs throughout his career which include missing weight, substance abuse addiction and a DWI charge. When you add his most recent alleged criminal endeavors, Chavez Jr.’s legacy seems to be one leaning more toward the negative side.
