Triple-A: Nashville Sounds (MIL) 7, Norfolk Tides 6
Trey Gibson’s tough start at Triple-A continued with six earned runs in four innings pitched. The kicker was a four-run fourth inning that included a three-run homer by former Orioles’ farmhand Daz Cameron. Gibson gave up eight hits and walked two. After starting his Norfolk career with five shutout innings, Gibson has now allowed 20 runs in his next four starts.
Another former O’s minor leaguer, Garrett Stallings, held the Tides to two his over the first six innings. In the fifth, Maverick Handley
tripled and scored on a groundout. In the sixth, Enrique Bradfield tripled and scored on a sac fly. It was a two-hit day for Bradfield. The Tides mounted a comeback after Stallings left, with a three-run homer by Jordyn Adams and a solo shot from Vimael Machín. But what ended up being the winning run for the Sounds came in the eighth, unearned thanks to an error from José Barrero.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 4, Harrisburg Senators (WAS) 3
Juaron Watts-Brown started and had his second consecutive strong start. He pitched 6.2 shutout innings with just one hit and two walks allowed. He struck out eight and started the game by retiring 12 straight.
The Baysox scored their first three runs on one swing, a three-run homer from Austin Overn. That lead was blown as soon as Watts-Brown came out of the game, but it simply set up the walk-off. In the bottom of the ninth, the Baysox loaded the bases on a single from Griff O’Ferrall and walks by Ethan Anderson and Thomas Sosa. The Baysox needed just one run, and that’s what Carter Young gave them in the form of a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Overn and O’Ferrall both had two-hit games. Anderson walked three times.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 7, Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 2
Starter Yeiber Cartaya somehow gave up just one run in four innings despite issuing six walks. Juan Rojas got the with 3.1 innings of one-run ball. He gave up six hits of his own.
The IronBirds’ offense had 12 total hits, four of which came from Anderson De Los Santos. He was in the middle of all three innings where the IronBirds scored. He singled and scored in the second, tripled in a run as part of the four-run fifth, and singled, stole second, and scored in the eighth.
Nate George and Vance Honeycutt had two hits each from the top two spots in the lineup. Honeycutt doubled and tripled.
Low-A: Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 5, Delmarva Shorebirds 4
Starter Adrian Heredia struck out six batters in 4.1 innings, but allowed four runs thanks in part to shaky defense. An error by Ike Irish led to an unearned run in the first, and catcher’s interference led to another as part of the Hillcats’ four-run fifth.
Three of the four Shorebirds runs came on home runs by Jordan Sanchez. He hit a two-run shot in the first inning and a solo homer in the eighth. In between, Colin Yeaman had a sac fly to account for the other run. Sanchez, who is just 19 years old, was just promoted to Delmarva from the Florida Coast League.
Wehiwa Aloy and Cobb Hightower each had one hit in the game. Ike Irish was hitless in five at-bats.
