Bayern Munich are set to renew Dayot Upamecano on a contract until 2030 later this week, which would finally bring a months long saga to a close. But just because the deed looks set to be done does not mean the drama is over. Typical for FC Hollywood, the story of how this supposed contract agreement took place was very tense and worthy of being the story of a soap opera.
Florian Plettenberg reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that Bayern followed up on their plan to withdraw their contract offer
before a U-turn was made:
FC Bayern withdrew their offer for Dayot Upamecano in writing today. The club expected a final decision today – and for them, the offer was no longer on the table. Upamecano himself later went to the club and said he wanted to extend. It was a power struggle between Upamecano’s agent and Bayern, with the player caught in the middle. Nevertheless, Bayern will now allow Upamecano to sign a new deal. It’s expected to happen this week.
In addition, RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported that several clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain were willing to meet Upamecano hefty contract demands.
This dramatic turnaround seems fairly similar to the Alphonso Davies saga one year ago, where it seemed the Canadian was set to leave for a tense 24 hours before a new contract was signed. How much of this is all real? How much of it is posturing? One has to believe there was a lot of the latter happening here.
