It’s been a bit of an odd stretch for Carolina fans with the Tar Heels having byes in two of the past four weeks (not to mention a Friday night game that kicked off at 10:30 PM ET), but today marks a return
to a more normal schedule as UNC hosts the South’s Oldest Rivalry.
Hearing that name always makes me wonder: Can a matchup really be considered a rivalry if there’s no ill will between the programs? I’ve personally never been able to conjure up anything beyond moderate resentment for Virginia, and I get the impression that’s the case for a lot of fans on both sides.
Depending on who you choose to believe, though, there could be some pretty strong resentment driving Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris today. Two weeks ago, as part of a larger story on the dysfunction within the UNC football program, The Athletic reported that Morris (who spent last season at North Texas) had expressed interest in transferring to Carolina but was rebuffed by general manager Michael Lombardi. This week, Bill Belichick and Morris both told the media there was never any contact between Morris and UNC.
Did The Athletic get bad information, or did Morris decide it was best to deny Carolina was ever on his radar? If it’s the latter, then he also denied all of us a revenge game narrative that could have given this rivalry some real spice.
