Philipp Treu might be getting closer to a Germany call-up — and it sounds like the SC Freiburg defender has already had a pretty strong sales pitch from the national team.
Treu revealed to Sky that he recently spoke with Germany’s coach over FaceTime, giving the 25-year-old a chance to hear firsthand what the national team has planned for him. As a right-back, Treu could fill a position of need on this German squad.
“I had a FaceTime call with the national team coach. It was a cool conversation to
get an impression of what his plan is. I can only say positive things. Whether it’ll be enough on Thursday remains to be seen,” Treu said (as captured by Sky Germany’s Dennis Bayer).
That last part is the only mystery.
Treu has quietly put together a strong case at SC Freiburg since returning to the club in 2025. The right-back has already logged significant minutes for Freiburg this season, including starts in the Bundesliga and European competition.
Now, he could be rewarded with his first senior Germany call-up. The timing makes sense. Germany is constantly searching for reliable options at full-back, and Treu offers versatility, energy and the ability to contribute on both sides of the ball.
Still, Treu knows nothing is guaranteed. The FaceTime call was encouraging, but Thursday’s squad announcement will determine whether the conversation turns into an official invitation. For now, Treu is simply waiting to find out whether his next trip will be with Freiburg — or Germany.
