One of the most fun World Cup debates is imagining a superstar changing national teams for one tournament. Every country has strengths and weaknesses, so adding one world-class player could completely shift the balance of the competition. That leads to today’s question: if you could take one player from any country and place him onto the World Cup squad you support, who would
it be and why?
For Germany supporters, two obvious dream additions stand out: Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.
Germany has no shortage of creativity with players like Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Joshua Kimmich pulling the strings, but adding an elite No. 9 could take the attack to another level. Kane would bring leadership, link-up play, penalty expertise, and calm finishing in big moments. Imagine Musiala and Wirtz feeding Kane in knockout matches — that sounds terrifying for the rest of the tournament.
Then there is Haaland, who would give Germany something entirely different: pure chaos and power. His pace, physicality, and ability to score from almost any angle would instantly make Germany one of the most feared transition teams in the world. A front line featuring Musiala drifting between the lines while Haaland bulldozes defenses feels almost unfair.
But there are plenty of creative possibilities for other nations too.
What if Rodri joined Argentina? The reigning world champions already control matches well, but adding arguably the best holding midfielder in football could make them nearly impossible to break down.
Or imagine Kylian Mbappé playing for Brazil. Brazil always has flair and technical brilliance, but Mbappé’s explosive pace on the counterattack would make them devastating in open space.
England fans might dream about adding Virgil van Dijk to solidify the back line, while Portugal supporters could fantasize about Dominik Szoboszlai bolstering their loaded attack.
And for a truly wild option, imagine Lamine Yamal lining up for France or Argentina. Giving one of the most exciting young talents in football even more elite talent around him could completely tilt the tournament.
Those are just a few possibilities — who would you steal for your World Cup team and why?
