Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders is set to undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon in the run-up to CU’s game against Iowa State on Saturday afternoon.
Sanders will undergo a procedure called ‘aspiration thrombectomy left popliteal and tibial arteries’, which is a minimally invasive surgery to remove blood clots from his left leg. He told the media that he expects to be back with the team extremely soon, hopefully back at practice as a full participant on Wednesday if things go as planned.
Colorado’s head coach has dealt with multiple health battles over the past four years, starting back during his time at Jackson State. Sanders underwent surgery to remove blood clots in his legs in 2021, leading to serious health issues and the amputation of two of his toes. In spring 2025, Sanders was also diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer. Thankfully, doctors were able to catch the cancer early and perform a full bladder removal and replacement, as Sanders is now cured of his cancer.
Last week, Sanders complained of his foot throbbing during his weekly Tuesday presser. The issue persisted throughout the week, leading to him coaching against TCU on the sidelines with only one shoe on for a significant portion of the game in Fort Worth. After the game, Sanders told media members that he feared his blood clots had returned.
Unfortunately, it looks as though Sanders was correct. Thankfully, it seems that this time around, the blood clots aren’t as serious. Sanders is expected to make a full recovery quickly and be on the sideline for Colorado’s game against the Cyclones this weekend.
“I’m gonna be alright,” said Sanders at the conclusion of his press conference on Tuesday.
