Good morning, TSFers! I’ve got some wonderful news for you me: it’s finally supposed to get above freezing in the D.C. area today! We’ve had about two weeks where the temperature has stayed below 32 degrees, but today, the high is 36. And then it’s supposed to go right back to below freezing until early next week. I have a newfound appreciation for those of you who live in colder climates, particularly those of you with dogs. Gunner does not understand that it being really cold makes it unpleasant
to walk him. He wants (and gets) his walks anyway.
I hope people elsewhere on the east coast and points west that were hit by the snow storm 10 days ago are doing alright. The DMV has not done well with it. We’ve had “snowcrete” on the ground the entire time, which has really snarled things up. As I understand it, the combination of a bunch of snow, then ice / freezing rain / sleet on top of it, and really cold temperatures got us this snowcrete mess.
If you’re not familiar, we’ve got about an inch of hard-packed snow and ice on top of everything below. Hard-packed as in it’ll bear your weight. It’s essentially a snowy ice rink. It’s slippery and tough to break up to shovel away. The street width has been significantly limited, the sidewalks still aren’t all cleared, schools have been out for six days (most are back today), etc. Part of the problem is the regular plows can’t break / move the snowcrete, so they’ve had to get construction equipment to load it into dump trucks and take it…somewhere. That’s the other part of the problem — we’ve run out of places to pile the snow without creating more obstacles!
I’m a snow-enjoyer but this stopped being fun several days ago. /end rant
