The Chicago Bulls will be engaging in a coaching search this summer as current Head Coach Billy Donovan has stepped down from his position. According to ESPN, Donovan decided not to pick up the last year of his contract option and will leave the Bulls.
“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, to allow the search process to unfold,” Donovan said in a statement
released by the team. “I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls, to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit.”
The article makes clear that Chicago wanted Donovan to return, but he opted not to. In recent weeks the Bulls fired their Vice President of Basketball Operations and their General Manager.
Donovan spent six years in Chicago, amassing regular-season record of 226-256, 1-4 in the franchise’s lone playoffs appearance in that span. Before joining the Bulls, Donovan coached five seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
