Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight champion and No. 1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter Islam Makhachev defends his title for the first time against Ireland’s Ian Garry in UFC 330’s main event this weekend (Sat., Aug. 15, 2026) inside Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
And while the Russian has a tough puzzle to solve this weekend, debate is already swirling about whom he should fight next if he gets past Garry.
The two clear frontrunners are Brazil’s Carlos
Prates and the undefeated Michael Morales, who will weigh in as the official backup for UFC 330’s main event.
With Morales serving as the backup fighter, many believe he will receive the next title shot. However, weighing in as a backup does not automatically guarantee a championship opportunity—just ask Mateusz Gamrot or Manel Kape.
Plus, Makhachev believes Morales needs to stay active and truly earn his shot.
“He’s a good contender—one of the contenders, for sure,” Makhachev told reporters during UFC 330 media day. “Just one thing I don’t understand is why he don’t fight. He has to deserve [a title fight] because Prates is still active and fighting. But I don’t know. I don’t want to look behind Ian Garry because I have a good opponent. After that, I don’t care who is next—Prates or Morales.”
Morales is sitting pretty at 19-0 with seven UFC wins and is a massive Welterweight. However, he does not have any former champions on his resume. Prates, meanwhile, has knocked out former champions in back-to-back fights, which should count for something in the title race.
Morales is coming off a first-round knockout win over top contender Sean Brady last November but has been sidelined ever since.
For Makhachev, being ready to step in at UFC 330 is not the same as doing enough to earn the next shot.
