The Steelers are adding another assistant coach according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, who posted Thursday that the team is expected to hire TCU assistant linebackers coach Eric Simonelli.
As
Zenitz notes, Simonelli has ties to now-Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy. Before TCU, Simonelli worked as a quality control coach on offense, defense, and special teams during over several seasons with McCarthy’s Dallas Cowboys. On his LinkedIn, Simonelli also listed himself as working in football analytics.
Simonelli joined the Cowboys out of college, but during his time at Wesleyan University, he was a student assistant coach for over two years. While in college, he also spent a month as an independent football research consultant for the San Francisco 49ers.
The exact role Simonelli is being hired for has not yet been reported. The Steelers already have an outside linebackers coach, and inside linebackers coach, and a defensive quality control coach in McCarthy’s new staff.
