Las Vegas Raiders’ training camp is finally here, as the team’s veterans reported to camp on Tuesday, Aug. 28. One of the biggest questions from the Raiders’ OTAs and minicamp sessions is centered around the health and availability of defensive end Maxx Crosby and cornerback Jermod McCoy. Head coach Klint Kubiak provided updates on Crosby’s and McCoy’s statuses, stating that “everyone’s going to be practicing [on Wednesday].”
“The plan is to get [McCoy] reps early and see how he responds in his recovery,”
Kubiak explained. “It’s a moving target with him. He’s a guy that worked extremely hard and has been dedicated to the program that we’ve put in front of him. But Jermod hasn’t played football in a year and we’re aware of that. But he’s ready to practice [on Wednesday], and we’re also going to be really smart with him and develop him the right way.”
On Crosby:
“[Crosby is] going to get all of the reps [on Wednesday] with the ones,” the coach continued. “He’s ready to go; he’s ready to practice. As practice unfolds and we’re watching our players, it’s always a moving target. But as of right now, [Wednesday] is a pretty short workday, an hour and 30 minutes. So, we’re expecting him to be ready to take all of those reps.”
What’s interesting about Kubiak’s response is that he was asked if Crosby was going to be a full participant in practice, which Kubiak didn’t directly answer and instead pointed out that the first practice is a shorter session and described the situation as a “moving target”. So, whether or not that means Crosby will still be limited during training camp remains to be seen.
The five-time Pro Bowl defensive end is recovering from offseason surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee, which infamously led to the Raiders putting him on injured reserve at the end of last season and a botched offseason trade with the Baltimore Ravens. McCoy, a rookie fourth-round pick, missed all of last season at Tennessee after suffering a torn ACL in January of 2025 and slid in the draft due to concerns over the knee. Both players were present but either limited or non-participants during OTAs and minicamp practices.
Meanwhile, free agent linebacker Nakobe Dean’s status is also up in the air heading into training camp after he missed several spring practices. Dean wasn’t brought up specifically in Kubiak’s press conference, but the assumption is that he’ll be on the field on Wednesday too, with the coach stating that everyone is available for the team’s first session of the summer.
