After seventeen action packed days, the 2026 World Cup has arrived at the knockout stage. We begin with the Round of 32, where Group A surprise runners-up South Africa face off against co-hosts Canada, who were a shock Group B runner-up after losing in their final group stage match.
South Africa’s upset of South Korea put them in the Round of 32 for the first time, and they’re hoping to be a team that can continue to wear Cinderella’s glass slipper. After their loss to Mexico in the opener, it felt
like they might be on the outs, particularly with two players getting red cards. Still, they persevered and defeated a South Korea team that likely underestimated them to claim second in Group A and book their trip to LA.
Canada did not expect to be in this position. As the co-hosts, they confidently figured they could win Group B, which would have allowed them to remain in Vancouver in front of the home fans. However, a final matchday loss to Switzerland meant they had to settle for second in the group, and now they travel out of Canada for the rest of the tournament. They now hope they can turn it around against Bafana Bafana and avoid going all the way home with their World Cup over.
