The end of the season is near, which means it’s time to start looking ahead to offseason storylines. The Rockies won’t make the playoffs, and they may not even avoid 100 losses, but one thing is for certain: They have a legitimate candidate for NL Rookie of the Year in TJ Rumfield.
Rumfield came to the Rockies via trade from the New York
Yankees in the offseason, and has taken this team by storm. In 134 games, he is slashing .290/.383/.437 with 41 extra-base hits, 61 RBI and 63 walks. The walks are especially noteworthy because he is just four shy of tying Dexter Fowler’s rookie walk record set in 2009. He also has 11 multi-walk games, second only behind Fowler’s 13, also in 2009.
Through August 31st, here’s how he ranks among Qualified NL Rookies:
- 134 games (2nd)
- 469 at-bats (4th)
- 55 runs scored (4th)
- 26 doubles (1st)
- 13 home runs (T-5th)
- 61 RBI (2nd)
- 63 walks (T-1st)
- .290 AVG (1st)
- .820 OPS (3rd)
