Butker added three more points with his leg to keep the Chiefs within striking distance.
The Broncos attempted to add three more points before halftime, but Will Lutz came up short on a 67-yard field goal attempt.
Mahomes then connected with Rice to reach the 30-yard line before finding Jalen Royals to get the Chiefs to the 17-yard line, putting Butker in prime field goal range.
Butker made the kick to cut into Denver’s lead.
End of second quarter: Broncos 10, Chiefs 9

After going three-for-three on field goal attempts in the first half, Butker attempted a 66-yarder but missed. The Broncos took over at the Chiefs’ 44-yard line.
Mahomes felt pressure from D.J. Jones and was sacked on third down, forcing the Chiefs to punt.

Dobbins found paydirt for the second time that afternoon, going untouched for a 12-yard rushing touchdown to extend Denver’s lead.
Mahomes knew the passing game wasn’t working, so he used his legs to pick up a crucial third-and-12 with a 14-yard rush early in the drive.
On fourth-and-four, Mahomes tried to pick up the first down with his legs once more. As he reached the ball toward the first-down marker, he took a hit and fumbled. The Broncos recovered the football, ending the Chiefs’ scoring opportunity.
