It’s Monday, and college baseball and softball are getting closer to tournament time. Also, there is always football news happening. But our coverage is still going strong. Check out our original coverage and what we can find from the World Wide Web below.
Boise State spring game
The Broncos finished spring practices, and the defense was the star in their annual spring game. The revamped secondary stood out for all the right reasons, with many of the newcomers looking like they can step into key roles next fall. The defensive
line looks pretty deep, and the linebackers showed flashes, even though they were uneven overall. The Boise State offense did have some nice scoring drives despite players being out and the vanilla playcalling. But true freshman wide receiver Rasean Jones looked like the real deal, confirming the hype he’s had all spring.
Fresno State spring game
Jackson Moore was on hand and dived into the projected depth chart based on the spring game, including spring standouts. The QB battle continues on without anyone creating separation, and the running back room is still deep. Harold Duvall is definitely a name to watch in the WR room and Jonah Leaupepetele appears to have cemented himself into the right guard spot on the line. The defensive line looks strong, while Nikko Baumgartner made a lot of improvement at linebacker this spring. In the secondary, Andre Cobb and Cam Cole may not end up starting, but they have put themselves in a position to be on the field in some capacity next season
Will 5 for 5 solve eligibility problems?
Matt Brown asks this question as the NCAA attempts to solve problems, or at least make changes. While he doesn’t blame any athletes for maximizing their NIL opportunities by staying in school longer, Brown worries the vote on the change is being rushed before unintended consequences can be fleshed out. A big question is when a class of athletes will lose the ability to have a sixth season, as the rule will end up impacting one class more than others. And will exceptions start being made or will the rule be upheld?
UConn to the Pac-12?
That’s what John Canzano is floating around in his post this weekend. Obviously, nothing is for sure or imminent, but there are things that make sense, and some that don’t. For starters, the Pac-12 needs a football team, but probably not another full member, and the Huskies are a football independent, with the rest of their sports, notably men’s basketball, in the Big East. UConn athletic department spending is comparable to other teams in the conference, so it’s a fit in that regard as well. The main drawback is the travel concerns, going from one side of the country to the other for every conference game. Stay tuned.
