Triple-A: Syracuse Mets 6, Norfolk Tides 5 – F/10
The Tides took a 5-3 lead into the ninth inning but allowed two to tie and were walked off in the bottom of the 10th.
Norfolk got on the board first with two runs in the second. José Barrero walked, then came in on a single by Luis Vázquez. Ryan Noda, who had been hit by a pitch, then scored on a wild pitch. Barrero came through in the sixth with a two-run homer to score Heston Kjerstad. Kjerstad had singled. Kjerstad also walked twice in the game. The Tides walked three times in the ninth but scored just
once, on a balk.
Yaqui Rivera started and allowed two runs in 3.2 innings. He did strike out eight, which is pretty good. Recently demoted Anthony Nunez allowed one run in two innings, then Cameron Weston blew the save in the ninth. He had pitched a scoreless eighth, but gave up two home runs to tie the game in the ninth. Enoli Paredes took the loss with a two-out single in the 10th that knocked in the Manfred Man.
Double-A: Richmond Flying Squirrels (SFG) 9, Chesapeake Baysox 4
Starter Juaron Watts-Brown allowed a run on a sac fly in the first, then settled in for a bit with three scoreless before surrendering a two-run homer in the fifth. His final line: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 K. His tough season continues, but this was his best start since April.
The Baysox were kept off the board until a fourth-inning Griff O’Ferrall home run, his fifth of the year. They scored again in the eighth and twice in the ninth, after the game was well out of hand. Willy Vasquez knocked in Thomas Sosa with a groundout; Sosa had doubled. Francisco Peguero doubled in the final two runs.
Dylan Beavers began his rehab journey with two walks and a groundout.
High-A: Frederick Keys 6, Hub City Spartanburgers 5
JT Quinn allowed two runs on five hits in a five-inning outing. He struck out six without a walk, and both runs scored on solo home runs.
The Keys got started on a high note with a four-run first inning. RJ Austin, Ike Irish, and Wehiwa Aloy hit three straight singles, with Austin scoring on Aloy’s knock. Victor Figueroa walked to load the bases, and Leandro Arias singled in Irish and Aloy. Elis Cuevas got their fourth run on a groundout. Irish knocked in the fifth and sixth runs on his second hit of the game.
The Spartanburgers made a game of it with three runs in the eighth and ninth, but Joe Glassey got the save despite allowing two runs. Joe Glassey is a good name.
Low-A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans (CHC) 21, Delmarva Shorebirds 10
If this game had ended after six innings, the Shorebirds would have won 10-5. But then the Pelicans scored four runs in the seventh (not so bad) and 12 runs in the eighth (horrifying).
Before all that, Christian Rodriguez started and allowed five runs in 5.1 innings. He was the victim of some bad defense and just two runs were earned. The offense scored two runs in the second and three runs in the third, then things looked well in hand with a five-run sixth inning. Unfortunately, three pitchers combined to score 16 runs in three innings.
The Shorebirds had nine hits, including multi-hit games from Jordan Sanchez, Jaiden Lo Re, and Joshua Liranzo.
