In a truly shocking turn of events, Bayern Munich has sold Wisdom Mike to Club Brugge per a report from Belgian news outlet Het Laatste Nieuws (aka HLN.BE via @iMiaSanMia). If true, this is a totally unexpected move given that it is a sale and not a loan:
Wisdom Mike is set to complete a permanent move to Belgian side Club Brugge for around €5m.
Freelance football journalist Sacha Tavolieri (via @iMiaSanMia) added to the news and reported that Mike has already undergone a physical. Tavolieri also reported that the deal
is worth €5 million and that there is no buy-back clause:
Mike has already undergone a medical at Club Brugge today. He will join the Belgian side for €5m and will be part of their first team rotation.
Bayern do not have a buy-back clause for Wisdom Mike. Permanent move to Club Brugge on a 5-year contract.
So…where did this all go wrong? After all, Mike was injured last spring, it is not as if there was a prolonged period of poor performances. So, what happened?
It could come down to opportunity — Mike might feel as if he is ready for first team football, whereas Bayern Munich did not have him in the plans for this campaign (at least not yet). It could also just be a situation where both sides feel as if the relationship has gone as far as it can.
Or it could be deeper. Mike did fall asleep in a team meeting last year. While the issue was muffled externally, the club did punish the youngster for his transgression:
Per the report (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia) Mike accidently fell asleep in the front row of the auditorium during a team meeting. The teenager had allegedly stayed out late the night before, with another youth player who has since been loaned out.
Kompany did not reprimand his player in front of the rest of the squad. Instead, he explained to Mike that he had to step up his game and something like that should not happen again. The talk worked, and Mike went on to work hard until he earned a Bundesliga debut during Bayern’s 4-0 win over Werder Bremen.
The coach apparently sent him onto the pitch with the words: “You deserved this — but don’t sleep again!”
Bayern Munich also sanctioned Mike for the incident. He lost his room at the FC Bayern Campus for a week, and was forced to stay in a hotel room at his own expense. The player’s father was also summoned for a meeting. After that, the matter was apparently settled, and Mike went on to make his debut without incident.
Just three weeks ago, Bayern Munich was working Mike on a plan to get him back up to speed as quickly as possible. Right now, there has been no confirmation or information from Bayern Munich, so this is all open to interpretation.
At this time last year, Mike was considered a top-notch prospect with the hopes of breaking into the senior team. Now, is just another academy product who has left the club.
