The first College Football Playoff rankings have just been released and while the LSU Tigers are sitting at 6-2, the “experts” have them ranked at No. 14 which puts them just out of reach of making the postseason, if the season were to end today.
These initial rankings are a bit skewed as LSU is ranked lower than Tennessee and Alabama, who is ranked above Kentucky despite having a better record. Honestly, the rankings never make sense and it will only get worse once they go to a 24 team playoff system.
The week, the Tigers return to action after a much-needed bye week following consecutive victories over Mississippi State and Auburn. Those performances helped LSU regain momentum after a disappointing overtime loss to Kentucky earlier in October. Despite their two losses, the Tigers have shown they can compete with some of the nation’s top programs. Both defeats came on the road against SEC opponents, with LSU falling to Ole Miss and Kentucky by a combined nine points.
However, the Tigers will need to continue building their resume if they hope to impress the playoff selection committee and get into the top 12.
LSU’s biggest opportunity comes Saturday afternoon when the Alabama Crimson Tide travel to Death Valley for a highly anticipated SEC showdown. Both teams enter the matchup with identical 6-2 records, making Saturday’s contest a potentially defining moment in their playoff pursuits. A victory over Alabama would provide LSU with a significant chance of climbing the rankings.
Unfortunately, the road ahead doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers, who will face Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas to close out the regular season. However, they will be in control their own destiny if they put everything together and win out.
