In a busy weekend of college football filled with some major upsets, the AP Poll voters had a lot to sort out after three top-five teams lost this early in the season for the first time since 2008.
Losses
for No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 LSU and No. 5 Georgia opened up the top of the rankings, allowing Oregon, Ole Miss and Alabama to make major moves at the top of the poll.
It was certainly a good week for the Michigan Wolverines to have their first bye, allowing the chaos to take place around them as they prepare for the Wisconsin Badgers. However, by sitting at home, Michigan moved down to No. 20 given how many upsets and surprising wins there were this weekend.
Around the conference, there was a ton of shakeup in both the AP Poll and the Big Ten standings. As previously mentioned, Oregon picked up a crucial road victory over Penn State on Saturday night, moving it from No. 4 to No. 2 and dropping the Nittany Lions from No. 2 to No. 7. Penn State’s loss to the Ducks continues a trend that is not favorable for head coach James Franklin, who is now 15-28 against AP-ranked teams in his time in Happy Valley, and 4-20 against AP top-10 programs.
Outside of the game of the week, Indiana scored with less than a minute to go to stay undefeated and take down the Iowa Hawkeyes, moving the Hoosiers up a few spots to No. 8. Illinois had a massive bounce-back performance against USC to move into the top-20, while subsequently knocking the Trojans out of the top-25 altogether. And Ohio State remained as the top team in the country after a late push against Washington on the road, halting the Huskies’ 18-game home game win streak in the process.
Keeping tabs on the rest of college football, the SEC had a big day, with big wins coming to Alabama over Georgia, Texas A&M over Auburn, and Ole Miss vs LSU. Those wins moved the Crimson Tide to No. 10, the Aggies to No. 6 and the Rebels to No. 4, while dropping Georgia to No. 12 and LSU down to No. 13.
On the flip side, the ACC struggled, losing a top-10 team in Florida State after its loss to newly ranked No. 24 Virginia on Friday night and Georgia Tech sneaking away with a 1-point win against Wake Forest after a failed 2-point conversion in overtime.
With so much to sort through, here is the full top-25 for this week:
