Despite Bayern Munich recording one of the greatest individual scoring seasons by any club in the history of European football, Harry Kane was unable to achieve a personal milestone. The all-time record of 41 goals in a single league season, achieved in 2021 by Robert Lewandowski, remains out of his grasp.
Kane did get tantalizingly close, managing 36 goals in 31 games, but that wouldn’t even put him second in the all-time list. FC Bayern legend Gerd Müller set the benchmark with his 40-goal season
in 1971/72, and both he and Lewandowski have broken the 35 goal barrier before.
So is the record simply too far away? Kane doesn’t think so. Speaking to Tz (via @iMiaSanMia), the England captain set his sights on the big 42.
“That’s the goal. I always say that it depends on playing a lot and staying fit. I’ll try to continue doing exactly that. The record is certainly not impossible.”
At his age, fitness is certainly Kane’s worst enemy. He is playing fewer games than he did when he was in the Premier League, but competing on three fronts (unlike Spurs). So the minutes add up very quickly. His sudden injury during the international break this year probably cost him the record.
One interesting implication of the comment — Harry Kane is currently locked in contract negotiations with the Bayern board. The fact that he mentions breaking the record could mean he intends to stay in the long term. Either that, or FC Augsburg are about to shock the world with a 100m euro bid. Or he could just break the record next season and leave. That… would be disappointing.
