Duke’s victory at Virginia Tech showed off a lot of good things from the Blue Devils. There was defensive tenacity, good ball movement and smart basketball. This video breaks down the Top Five plays from the game.
That’s subjective of course, but no matter how you might rank the plays in this game, these are all great plays.
#5 – Cayden to Cameron for a layup as the Boozer brothers get an easy basket. It’s nothing fancy, just a nice, basic pass for a layup. Good, solid basketball. Three point play, too.
#4 – Pat Ngongba gets after it and knocks the ball loose on a hustle play. Caleb Foster picks it up and hits Cameron Boozer for a lob and a basket.
#3 – Foster drives the lane, pulls off a beautiful fake, then hits Boozer again for a wide-open three. Watch it carefully. It’s really a beautiful play on Foster’s part. He knew exactly where he was taking the play and that, for some reason, the Hokies left Boozer alone.
#2 – Boozer gets an offensive rebound, turns to scan and hits Maliq Brown as he streaks towards the basket. If you watch carefully, you’ll see some nice details about both players. We hit the space bar and watched how Boozer followed the ball. It gives you some insight on what makes him so effective.
#1 – This one is really cool if you hit the space bar to pause it repeatedly: Ben Hammond tries to pass over both Boozers, who go up in sync, then turn in sync as Ngongba knocks Hammonds’ high pass loose. They both turn at the same time when Cameron picks up the loose ball. He passes it to Cayden just as a defender tries to intercept the ball. Cayden then hits Cameron back without dribbling. Then Cameron takes on dribble, Eurosteps past Jailen Bedford, who wisely gets out the way. Boozer goes up to dunk just as Tobi Lawal catches up and tries for the block.
You’d never see it during the game, but Boozer anticipates a collision, closes his eyes and braces himself on the way down.
The key, though, is that even though he expects a collision, he still takes the ball right in.
When you slow this down, they unspoken synchronization between the brothers and that there were only two dribbles between when Cameron picked the loose ball up in the paint and when he dunked it at the other end was magnificent basketball.
