Pat Freiermuth wants to set the record straight.
After Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said following Sunday’s loss against the Browns that Pittsburgh needed to “clean our own house,” the comment sparked plenty of speculation about the state of the locker room and the team’s performance through the first four games.
According to Freiermuth, however, the message was not directed at any internal issues or signs of dysfunction.
“I think people got took that inaccurately,” Freiermuth said.
“It was more so of us going over the first four weeks, what we can get better at, going on the same page, and what we can do over the next four weeks until the bye week.”
Freiermuth emphasized that there are no issues inside the locker room, despite the Steelers sitting at 2-2 and looking for more consistency on both sides of the ball.
“Everything is good in the locker room,” Freiermuth said. “We are working to win. We’re 2-2, we wish we were better, but there are things on film that are correctable that we are able to fix.”
McCarthy’s “clean our own house” remark came as the Steelers entered a critical stretch of their schedule. Rather than signaling major problems internally, Freiermuth characterized the message as a challenge for the team to evaluate its mistakes, improve communication and clean up the details that have contributed to an uneven start.
At 2-2, the Steelers remain firmly in the AFC playoff picture, but the next several weeks will provide an important test for McCarthy’s first season in Pittsburgh. Freiermuth’s clarification makes it clear the focus inside the building is on correction, not division.
