With the upcoming World Cup just a matter of days away, the world will see the top footballers on display on the game’s biggest stage. A playground for football will take place in North America, where champions Argentina will look to defend their crown against Spain, France, Germany, and other top nations. While all the discussion is on squad analysis, there is an intriguing conversation about the shirts these players will wear.
Football fashion has been on the rise around the globe, and these jerseys
become a way for fans to identify with the culture, particular teams, and even players. While fans get to be a part of this culture when they wear the kits, it is up to the nations and outfitters on what these shirts will look like.
There is perhaps no greater football shirt than one that pays homage to a former shirt. Germany comes to mind in 2026, as a country that is celebrating their past. Adidas, in the final year of their partnership with the DFB, is celebrating both the 1990 home shirt, as well as the 2014 home shirt. Of course, these are both the shirts that Germany won its two most recent World Cups in, as well as being simply beautiful shirts.
The kit has already earned massive praise from fans and critics, and the kit will be on full display in a matter of days when Germany kicks off their tournament on June 14th in Houston against Curaçao. However, you don’t have to look far to find other countries celebrating their past kits.
Argentina will be once again going with their iconic white and blue vertical stripes, a design they rarely deviate from. But when the look is so iconic, why not celebrate it with another rendition with a more modern look? With Lionel Messi’s last dance happening this summer, surely this is a shirt that will do generational sales numbers across all parts of the globe.
Mexico has perhaps the greatest kit of the three hosts and by far the deepest history in the beautiful game. Mexico’s home strip is inspired by the one worn in 1998 and the decorative Aztec design pays homage to not just the country’s football history, but a beautiful homage to the country’s history.
Even the third kit pays tribute their history. Well in, Mexico!
The United States will be hosting for the second time in their history, and the most recent since 1994. In 1994, USA went with a now iconic bold and shiny look for the stars and stripes. Unfortunately, the Americans didn’t pay celebration to the iconic shirt but chose to go in a unique direction for what could be a massive World Cup for the two-time hosts.
The last of the three hosts is of course, Canada. The often forgotten of the three nations but one that will be hungry to show the world what they have to offer on the football pitch. While Canada doesn’t have a rich history of football kits, they decide on their patriot red with the famous maple leaf to pay homage to the country’s flag.
While they won’t be tournament favorites, there are a few other countries paying celebration to their rich kit history. Uruguay will pay homage with their iconic light blue color and being one of the very few teams that still use a collar on their kits. Celebrating a deeply rich history of football in the South American country, this kit is beautiful.
Lastly, perhaps the greatest example of all of an iconic design is Croatia’s home kits. Rarely do they deviate from their world-famous red-and-white checkered pattern, and why would they? A kit synonymous with the beautiful game and with Croatia’s recent results on the world’s biggest stage, the kit is only becoming more and more iconic with each rendition of the tournament.
With kit culture at the front of the mind for these outfitters, these kits have stepped up in creativity in recent years but what is always at the forefront for the most successful designs, are one that celebrates history, while moving towards the future.
