Despite having denied the links more than once, Manchester City have not given up hope of Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany potentially replacing Pep Guardiola as manager of the club. For the Cityzens, it would be a dream homecoming for one of the club’s best ever center backs, but Kompany is working absolute wonders at Bayern and is right where he should be, having just signed a contract extension along with the rest of his staff back in October that keeps him in Munich through June 2030.
Guardiola’s
side are currently hunting down Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table as they hunt down a treble of their own. They’ve already won the Carabao Cup and are still in the running to win the FA Cup in addition to being right back in the Premier League title mix with the win over Arsenal coming just after the Gunners’ shock home loss to Bournemouth. Regardless of what happens between now and the end of May, Guardiola’s contract at City expires in the summer of 2027, so the club’s hierarchy is in search of a successor.
In the event that Kompany were to win the treble in only his second season as manager of FC Bayern, there’s belief within Manchester City that the Belgian could then choose to look for a new challenge abroad and potentially make a return to the club where he won a lot of silverware as a player (via @iMiaSanMia). Of course, as is always the case with transfer rumors of this nature, there are a lot of moving parts, but Kompany has repeatedly played down links of him going to City, even with the recommendation from Guardiola himself.
Recently speaking to Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen expressed his belief that there’s absolutely no chance Kompany would leave Munich prematurely. “We’ve just extended Vincent’s contract. So this is not a question at all. I am also convinced that Vincent doesn’t do anything he hasn’t thought through thoroughly beforehand and considered all the scenarios that could potentially call such a decision into question. That’s why I believe 100% that he asked himself this question before committing to a new deal. His answer was to extend the contract, and that’s why it doesn’t matter at all whether someone else comes in for him or how many more titles we hopefully win this season,” he explained.
Other than the allure of a homecoming to a place where he was wildly successful as a player and taking over for a World Cup manager that was also successful at Bayern, there’s no reason for Kompany to leave Bayern early. His current side ae breaking records left and right and are only getting better.
