We were a simple half-point hook from a truly outstanding week in week 5.
Damn you Georgia, only beating Vanderbilt by 24 points on the dot. Thus is the life of a sports bettor, sadly. Overall we went 4-2, but 1-2 on Best Bets last week to bring our season record up to an even 9-9 on Best Bets and 22-14 on our overall picks. Not too bad, and it’ll look even better when we nail these picks in Week 6. Let’s get to it!
Best Bets
Texas A&M @ Missouri (-3.5)
The biggest factor in this game won’t be X’s and O’s schematically – it will be whether or not Drinkwitz can get his team to come out with even 75 percent of the fire and energy the Tigers played with against Florida last week. If they can, Mizzou will win this game. If they come out flat and have a slow start like other games this season, Mike Elko and his crew could scheme up ways to beat Mizzou for the third straight year. I think this Tiger team will come out focused and win by at least a touchdown.
Indiana (-7.5) @ Nebraska
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: “Nebraska begins the season 5-0 against a terrible schedule.” It seems like this has been the case every year since the turn of the century. And every year, Nebraska begins to play a few teams with pulses and they proceed to lose five out of the next six games. In fact, they’ve lost 31 straight games to ranked teams. Well Indiana is ranked and I think it’s insulting to what Cignetti has built there that they are barely a touchdown favorite. I’m taking the Hoosiers to win comfortably.
Duke (-6.5) @ Georgia Tech
Duke is pretty good and Georgia Tech is flat out awful. We’ve faded Stanford several times so far this year on Best Bets to great effect. Guess what? Georgia Tech LOST to Stanford. In fact, they’ve lost to every FBS team they’ve played thus far. I’m not sure why they won’t continue that streak to an undefeated Duke team.
Worth a look
UCF @ Oklahoma State (-10.5)
Scott Frost and UCF got off to a nice start early in his second year, but they’ve come back to reality once the schedule tightened up on them. They have a pretty stout defense, but they’ve scored an average of 15 points per game against FBS teams. That won’t be nearly enough to beat a high-powered Drew Mestemaker-led Cowboy offense in Stillwater. I think Oklahoma State rolls.
Minnesota (-2.5) @ Purdue
The fighting Barry Odoms got their first Big 10 win in nearly three years last week when they knocked off Illinois. That’s great for them, but I think the oddsmakers got a bit over their skis with this spread. Minnesota is playing good football and to give them less than a field goal against what is still one of the worst P4 teams in the country is crazy work. I’ll take the Gophers by a touchdown.
kansas @ Utah (-15.5)
This one is simple. Utah is a juggernaut in the Big 12 and kansas sucks a lot. This game is in Salt Lake City and I think the Utes absolutely dominate the jayhawks. I’ll enjoy every minute of it.
