While the Lakers were reportedly optimistic that Luka Dončić’s hamstring strain wasn’t major, it has forced him to miss the last three games.
Now, the team has ruled him out for LA’s upcoming game against Dallas. This is the last game before the All-Star break and with the festivities happening this week, Luka’s participation in the game is now very much in question.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Luka is continuing his rehab and is still hoping to play in the All-Star Game.
Clearly, Luka wants to celebrate his sixth NBA All-Star appearance by playing this Sunday in Los Angeles. But if his hamstring doesn’t allow it, then he can’t play.
Luka is set to play for Team World in the All-Star Game’s new format, and it would be his first time as an All-Star representing the Lakers.
Dončić’s first full season in Los Angeles has been a smashing success. He is averaging an NBA-high 32.8 points per game and was named the Western Conference Player of the Month for January.
The silver lining if Luka is out for the All-Star Game is that he would be able to get extended rest without missing any additional games. LA is set to play the Clippers on Feb.20, giving Luka ample time to be 100% healthy before stepping back onto the court.
For now, his availability will be something NBA fans will need to monitor.
While the Luka injury updates weren’t positive, the Lakers did get some good news on the injury front. After having five key players out for their contest against the Spurs, LeBron James, Austin Reaves and Marcus Smart are off the injury report.
Deandre Ayton also missed LA’s game against San Antonio, but he remains questionable due to right knee soreness.
Lakers-Mavs games now have some extra sizzle since Luka was traded from Dallas to LA, but now this will essentially just be another game and the main objective for LA will be to enter the All-Star break with a win.
Hopefully, when the Lakers do return to play, Luka will be back with them.
