It is Day 53 of our 100-day countdown to kickoff. We are looking back at the 100 most iconic games in Dallas Cowboys history. The countdown will leads us right up to the opening game of 2026. We take into consideration things like how big the game was for the organization, how memorable the game was, games that had unusual events take place, games that are a part of NFL lore, Cowboys firsts, and games where the Cowboys just plain
dominated. Variety is the spice of life and we have all different kind of Cowboys games to review. At the bottom, we’ll link each day of the countdown so you can go back and check out any you missed.
Let’s kick things off here for Day 53 of our 100-day countdown to kickoff, as we revisit one of the wildest finishes in Cowboys history. Dallas appeared beaten several times against the New York Giants last year, only for Dak Prescott to keep answering and Brandon Aubrey to produce two pressure kicks that turned a likely defeat into overtime victory.

Desperation was on the menu for Week 2 as both teams hunted for their first win of the 2025 season. Early on, it was all New York. Russell Wilson had the Giants flying high with a 13-3 lead while the Cowboys offense looked stuck in first gear. Prescott finally found the clutch, hitting KaVontae Turpin for a much-needed house call, but Dallas still went into halftime chasing the Giants 13-10.
The game began to change after Prescott threw an interception early in the third quarter. New York started at the Dallas 40-yard line but failed on fourth down near the goal line. The Cowboys immediately travelled 90 yards in six plays, with Javonte Williams breaking tackles on a 30-yard touchdown run that gave Dallas its first lead at 17-13.
That advantage was only the beginning of the chaos. New York cut the score to 17-16 before Aubrey made a 44-yard field goal. Cam Skattebo’s short touchdown then put the Giants ahead 23-20, but Prescott answered by completing all five of his passes on the next Dallas possession. Miles Sanders finished the drive with a four-yard touchdown run to restore the Cowboys’ lead.
The final three minutes became a contest in which neither defense could protect an advantage. Wilson found Wan’Dale Robinson for a touchdown on fourth-and-four, putting New York ahead 30-27 with 2:44 remaining. Prescott responded by taking Dallas 71 yards in less than two minutes, finishing the drive with a touchdown pass to George Pickens near the left pylon.
With less than a minute remaining, Dallas led 34-30. However, Wilson quickly responded with two plays. Scrambling into Cowboys territory, he launched a deep pass to Malik Nabers, who caught it between two defenders for a 48-yard touchdown. This move propelled New York back into the lead, with a final score of 37-34, just 33 seconds left.
Prescott still refused to let the game end. An 18-yard completion to Jake Ferguson moved the ball to the Giants’ 49-yard line, and Williams gained four more yards on a quick handoff. Dallas then asked Aubrey to attempt a 64-yard field goal with five seconds remaining. Aubrey drove the ball through the uprights as time expired, tying the score at 37 and sending the game into overtime. It was another example of why his range changes how Dallas can manage late-game situations.
Neither team scored on its first overtime possession, and Dallas eventually punted for a second time. With the clock approaching two minutes, Wilson attempted another deep pass toward Nabers. Donovan Wilson intercepted it at the Dallas 30-yard line, providing the Cowboys with the defensive play they had been missing throughout the afternoon.
Prescott immediately found Pickens for 27 yards, followed by an insanely well executed scramble for 14 more, moving Dallas to the New York 28. Aubrey came onto the field with four seconds remaining and calmly converted a 46-yard field goal, securing the win for the second time that afternoon as the clock struck zero.
This game belongs on the countdown because of how many times Dallas appeared to have lost it. The Cowboys surrendered three go-ahead touchdowns during the fourth quarter, gave up 450 passing yards and were seconds away from a tie game. Prescott’s late-game composure, Donovan Wilson’s interception and Aubrey’s extraordinary range allowed them to survive every mistake.
Interesting Facts About the Game
The 64-yard field goal was the second-longest successful kick of Aubrey’s career. It also made him the first player to convert multiple field goals from at least 64 yards.
