The Boston College men’s hockey team dropped the second game of their weekend series with St. Cloud State on Saturday night, falling by a score of 5-3. The Eagles spent a lot of time in the penalty box throughout the game, continuing a bit of a concerining trend to start the season, and found themselves chasing a multi goal deficit for pretty much the entire last two periods of the game.
St. Cloud state took the lead just about nine minutes into the opening period, scoring on a wrist shot that managed
to get past Leo Henriquez despite the goalie getting a big piece of the puck. BC wasn’t able to do much to get back into the game afterwards, as they had to kill off a few penalties over the course of the period and spent most of the time in their own end as a result. It looked like they were going to escape down just one goal, but St. Cloud managed to double their lead with just about 30 seconds left on the clock to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
BC took another penalty early on in the second period and they weren’t able to kill this one off, with St. Cloud scoring on a bomb of a slap shot from the point to make it a three-goal game. The Eagles finally started to generate some chances in the shifts following St. Cloud’s third goal, and they managed to cut into the lead just about halfway through the second period when Teddy Mutryn scored his first collegiate goal by redirecting a point shot. St. Cloud respnded less than a minute later, however, scoring on a rebound to make it a 4-1 game reestablish their three-goal lead heading into the third.
BC had an early chance to get back into the game with their first power play opportunity early on in the third period, but they came up empty despite creating some good chances and St. Cloud put them away for good a few minutes later, scoring off of a nice passing play to make it a 5-1 game. Carson Woodall scored the first goal of his BC career on a one timer from the slot with 8 minutes left and Matias Vanhanen did the same with 1:55 left and BC on a six-on-three power play with their goalie pulled, but that was as close as things would get as the Eagles dropped this one by a 5-3 score.
This was a bit of a letdown after a really strong performance on Thursday night, as a win would have capped off a series sweep and had the Eagles looking good after an opening night loss to Alaska. Instead, the team is now 1-2 to start the season and about to head out for their first road trip of the season where they’ll face a Denver team that once again has championship aspirations. They’ll need to pla a much better game if they want to come out with a result from either of those two games, and they’ll have a chance when the weekend series gets underway on Friday night.
