The Green Bay Packers’ snap counts from their preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers dropped yesterday, but they don’t tell you very much. When players like cornerback Jaylin Simpson are leading the team in total snaps, it doesn’t really paint a clear picture of who is getting in the mix with the Packers’ first- and second-team units.
So as a gift to you, I have charted all of the Packers’ first- and second-team snaps against the Steelers, on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
This gives us a better look at what Green Bay’s depth chart looks like right now, compared to raw snap counts. I hope you enjoy (and I’ll be doing this moving forward in the preseason, too).
I’ also added some notes when I thought they were relevant.
Packers 1st Team Offense
Quarterback
- Jordan Love: 9 snaps
Running Back
- MarShawn Lloyd: 9 snaps
Reminder: Josh Jacobs (groin) and Chris Brooks (hamstring) were both held out of the game with injuries.
Receiver
- Matthew Golden: 9 snaps
- Christian Watson: 8 snaps
- Jayden Reed: 7 snaps
- Savion Williams: 1 snap
As expected, Jayden Reed only got on the field in three-receiver sets, as he’s been used almost exclusively as a slot receiver in his time with Green Bay. That doesn’t seem to be changing in 2026. Savion Williams got in for one snap when Christian Watson needed a breather.
Tight End
- Josh Whyle: 8 snaps
- Drake Dabney: 3 snaps
While Drake Dabney “started” the game and Josh Whyle didn’t, Whyle out-snapped Dabney with the first-team unit. Generally, Dabney played an in-line position more than Whyle did on Thursday night. Reminder: Tucker Kraft (knee) and Luke Musgrave (neck) were held out of action.
Offensive Line
- Jordan Morgan: 9 snaps (LT)
- Jager Burton: 9 snaps (LG)
- Sean Rhyan: 9 snaps (C)
- Jacob Monk: 9 snaps (RG)
- Anthony Belton: 9 snaps (RT)
Without expected starting right guard Aaron Banks (knee) and starting right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele (knee), Jager Burton and Jacob Monk entered the starting lineup. Monk actually played right guard, pushing expected starting right guard Anthony Belton to right tackle, as the Packers don’t have much tackle depth at the moment.
Packers 2nd Team Offense
Quarterback
- Tyrod Taylor: 13 snaps
Running Back
- Pierre Strong Jr.: 7 snaps
- MarShawn Lloyd: 3 snaps
- Jaden Nixon: 3 snaps
With Lloyd getting all of the work with the first-team unit, Pierre Strong Jr. got the most burn with the second stringers. Notably, undrafted rookie Jaden Nixon got looks ahead of Damien Martinez, a 2025 draft pick who the Packers picked up in December.
Receiver
- Bo Melton: 11 snaps
- Savion Williams: 11 snaps
- Skyy Moore: 9 snaps
- Isaiah Neyor: 4 snaps
Bo Melton and Savion Williams were the “starting” outside receivers for the second-team unit, with Skyy Moore playing the role of Jayden Reed — a player who only came onto the field in three-receiver sets, mostly as a slot receiver. Isaiah Neyor got in the mix, but only when Melton and Williams were subbed out for a breather.
Tight End
- Drake Dabney: 11 snaps
- Messiah Swinson: 5 snaps
Dabney got the most looks at tight end with the second-team unit, and apparently Messiah Swinson is the next man up, ahead of McCallan Castles and international exemption Thomas Yassmin, whose first practice with Green Bay was on Family Night.
Offensive Line
- Jordan Morgan: 13 snaps (LT)
- Jager Burton: 13 snaps (LG)
- Jacob Monk: 13 snaps (C)
- Donovan Jennings: 13 snaps (RG)
- Anthony Belton: 13 snaps (RT)
Morgan, Burton, Monk and Belton stayed on the field with the second-team unit, but Monk moved to center as Sean Rhyan was shut down for the day. This opened up a spot at right guard for Donovan Jennings to jump into the lineup. Yes, they all got looks ahead of the likes of Darian Kinnard, John Williams and Travis Glover.
Packers 1st Team Defense
Defensive Line
- Karl Brooks: 3 snaps
- Warren Brinson: 2 snaps
- Jonathan Ford: 1 snap
Both Devonte Wyatt (knee) and Javon Hargrave (knee), the Packers’ most important defensive linemen, weren’t dressed up for the game on Thursday. Jonathan Ford’s snap with the first-team unit came as a 3-4 nose tackle (more on this later), while Karl Brooks and Brinson were the “ends” in that look. Brooks and Brinson also played the nickel snap before the Packers’ first-team defense’s final play: a subpackage where edge rusher Lukas Van Ness kicked into the interior. Brooks was the lone defensive lineman on the field for that rush package.
Edge Defender
- Lukas Van Ness: 3 snaps
- Barryn Sorrell: 3 snaps
- Collin Oliver: 1 snap
Lukas Van Ness and Barryn Sorrell were the starting edges in this game, and they didn’t get any work after the first-team defense’s three-play drive. Collin Oliver got in the game as a subpackage rusher when Van Ness kicked inside, ahead of Brenton Cox Jr. It’s worth mentioning here that Dani Dennis-Sutton, the Packers’ fourth-round rookie, missed the game with an illness.
Off-Ball Linebacker
- Zaire Franklin: 3 snaps
- Edgerrin Cooper: 3 snaps
Cornerback
- Keisean Nixon: 3 snaps
- Brandon Cisse: 3 snaps
Safety
- Xavier McKinney: 3 snaps
- Evan Williams: 3 snaps
- Kitan Oladapo: 2 snaps
Kitan Oladapo got two snaps with the first-team offense, both in the slot as an injury replacement for Javon Bullard (foot).
Packers 2nd Team Defense
Defensive Line
- Warren Brinson: 14 snaps
- Chris McClellan: 11 snaps
- Anthony Campbell: 10 snaps
- Nazir Stackhouse: 10 snaps
- Jonathan Ford: 7 snaps
- Jaden Crumedy: 1 snap
Again, Ford was used almost exclusively as an odd front nose tackle with the second-team defense, while the rest of the linemen moved around. It seems like the team has a defined role for Ford, unlike the rest of their group — including the big-bodied Nazir Stackhouse.
Edge Defender
- Brenton Cox Jr.: 14 snaps
- Collin Oliver: 12 snaps
- Nyjalik Kelly: 10 snaps
- Arron Mosby: 8 snaps
Cox outsnapped Oliver with the second-team unit, even though Oliver got in with the first-team unit in the pressure package. I’m guessing that Nyjalik Kelly and Arron Mosby will get fewer opportunities with the second-team unit when Dennis-Sutton returns to the field. Kelly struggled playing assignment football throughout the night.
Off-Ball Linebacker
- Isaiah McDuffie: 22 snaps
- Ty’Ron Hopper: 19 snaps
The three snaps that Ty’Ron Hopper didn’t play while Isaiah McDuffie was on the field came when Jonathan Gannon called one-linebacker “Penny” packages.
Cornerback
- Keisean Nixon: 17 snaps
- Brandon Cisse: 17 snaps
- Benjamin St-Juste: 5 snaps
- Jaylin Simpson: 5 snaps
Keisean Nixon and Brandon Cisse, who played the first-team snaps at outside cornerback, played the first 17 snaps of the second-team defense, too. When they were shut down is when Benjamin St-Juste and Jaylin Simpson got their shot at playing outside cornerback with the second-team unit. All of Simpson’s snaps here came at outside cornerback. He did end up playing some slot reps with the third- and fourth-string defenses later in the game, though. Quick reminder: Carrington Valentine was out with a hamstring and is battling with Cisse and St-Juste for the starting job opposite Nixon.
Safety
- Kitan Oladapo: 22 snaps
- Mark Perry: 22 snaps
- Murvin Kenion III: 16 snaps
In base 3-4 defense looks, the safeties were Kitan Oladapo and Mary Perry on the second-team defense. When the team played nickel packages, with five defensive backs on the field, Oladapo kicked into the slot, and Murvin Kenion III came off the bench to play safety. Oladapo looked a lot better as a true safety than he did when he was in the slot on Thursday.
