Could Harry Kane be out for the first leg of Bayern Munich’s entry into the Champions League knockouts next week against Atalanta? Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has suddenly sounded less than certain.
“Hopefully. If he makes it then great. Otherwise we’ll do it with the guys we have,” Kompany said simply after Bayern’s 4-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Wait…wasn’t this a minor thing? The pre-game update had Vincent Kompany calling the issue “nothing serious”
and adding that he did expect Kane to make it to the Champions League midweek clash.
Nevertheless, there is probably not much to read into here. A late-breaking injury that knocks a player out of a league match at the start of a weekend certainly is the type of issue that could linger into the following week…but Kompany could equally be taking the opportunity to express his confidence in the players that don’t usually get to play — one of whom, Nicolas Jackson, just scored a goal starting in Kane’s place.
It wouldn’t hurt for Atalanta to have to think about Bayern’s lineup, too. If Kane is actually fine, he should suit up on Tuesday. And if he can’t…well, then we can panic.
Except judging by how the squad played today? They’ll be fine.
