On Tuesday evening, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that the Kansas City Chiefs have had conversations about a potential trade with one player entering the final year of his rookie deal. On Thursday, that trade was executed, according to the same source.
According to Fowler, offensive tackle Wanya Morris
is being traded to the Atlanta Falcons; NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported the compensation coming back to Kansas City was a sixth-round pick in 2027. The Chiefs are also dealing a seventh-round pick in 2027 in the deal.
Morris has started 16 games for the Chiefs since being selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and will now join former Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor in Atlanta.
Morris’ last start was at left tackle in Week 14 of the 2025 season, but Morris was injured on the first play from scrimmage and missed the remainder of the season.
Prior to that, Morris started 11 games on the blind side of quarterback Patrick Mahomes during the 2024 campaign. In that stretch, he allowed five sacks and seven other quarterback hits, per Pro Football Focus.
Measuring 6 feet 5 inches tall, 307 pounds, with arm length over 35 inches, Morris was an ideal fit for the Chiefs’ offensive line when he was selected with pick No. 92. However, his potential was never realized over the first three years of his career, despite ample opportunity.
With last year’s first-round pick, Josh Simmons, slated to start at left tackle, Morris’ sights would have been set on competing for the right tackle position. He has taken 86 snaps on the right side playing for Kansas City, and finished his collegiate career as a starting right tackle for the Oklahoma Sooners.
However, there is clearly an understanding that Morris is not in the “competition” for right tackle, as head coach Andy Reid called the position’s current status on Thursday morning. Jaylon Moore, Esa Pole, and rookie minicamp tryout KBenson are in the mix, but Morris is officially not.
It’s also worth noting that the Chiefs’ 90-man offseason roster includes Ethan Driskell, who had impressive flashes in the preseason after signing as an undrafted player last year.
