The Jays (at the moment) are 3.5 games up on both the Yankees and Red Sox. I’d prefer to be up a dozen or so, but such is life. They also have the best record in the AL by half a game, over the Tigers.
The Jays refuse to make much news on off-days. There were little bits today.
In the series against the Yankees we have the planned starters:
- Friday: Kevin Gausman (8-10, 3.75) vs. Cam Schlittler (2-2, 2.61).
- Saturday: Max Scherzer (5-2, 4.11) vs. Luis Gil (2-1, 3.68).
- Sunday: Chris Bassitt (11-7, 4.10) vs. Max Fried (15-5, 2.98). Just a thought, his parents should have named him Fred Fried. But Deep Fried would work too.
There is a fair bit of talk about Trey Yesavage getting a call up to the Jays to help out in the bullpen. I would love to see it. He struck out six in three innings
of relief Tuesday for the Bisons.
The team would have to drop someone from the 40-man roster to make room for him. And if they want him in the playoffs, there would have to be an injury.
We’ll see what his next few outings are like in Buffalo.
The Jays signed Buddy Kennedy and René Pinto. to minor league contracts.
Kennedy we know. Pino is a catcher, he’s played 82 games with the Rays over three seasons. This year he was in the Diamondbacks organization until they released him at the end of August. He’s 28, from Venezuela. Kind of the good glove/weak bat catcher type.
Yesterday’s Umpire Scorecard ends our little streak of excellent work by plate umpires. In his defense, I’m sure he would have been great if the pitchers just stopped throwing to the edge of the strike zone.
