Tiger Jeet Singh recently returned to Japan in what was said to be his first wrestling-related appearance in the country in 14 years. However, the moment will likely not be remembered by most in attendance as a triumphant return.
While seeing the 82-year-old icon was surely a highlight for fans, the October 17th appearance at the Yoyogi National Stadium Gymnasium No. 2 in Shibuya, Japan, was marred by Singh accidentally injuring a fan with his sword.
Japanese media reported that as Singh made his way
to the ring while wildly swinging his trademark saber, the blade made contact with a fan’s forehead, and medical personnel at the venue attended to the man before an ambulance was called.
According to Sports Hochi, the man was treated at a nearby hospital, but fortunately his injury was said to be minor.
Though the incident was surely a distraction for wrestler Megumi Kudo’s 40th Anniversary event, Singh did not seem sorry for injuring the fan. In fact, he blamed the spectator for not moving out of the way of his sword.
“It was a mistake for him to be in front of me. It’s his fault. You know that, right?” Singh said to Tokyo Sports. “All he had to do was get out of my way.”
The Indian star’s son, former WWE star Tiger Ali Singh, backed up his father.
“The announcer was saying, ‘Please be careful!’ They were warning him it was dangerous, but he didn’t move out of the way,” Tiger said. “I’m sure he won’t make the same mistake again. Just like my father said, this was an accident.”
However, for her part, Megumi Kudo was much more apologetic.
“I believe there were shortcomings in our corner team setup,” the Japanese star said at a post-show press conference. “I deeply apologize for injuring the fans who came to enjoy the show. I’m truly sorry. I think you were able to see the Shin you all wanted to see. However, I’m truly sorry that he [the fan] got injured. As an organization, we will do everything we can to address the situation.”
