For a good while during the summer, it seemed as though the Yankees might actually miss out on October baseball despite their strong start to the season. They ceded their grip on the AL East to the Blue Jays and played enough lackluster baseball to put themselves in the dregs of the Wild Card picture (or worse). They still might end up a Wild Card in 2025, but with a walk-off win on Tuesday, they’ve at least punched their playoff ticket and look like a lock to at least host home games in the first
round.
However, because Toronto lost last night to Boston in conjunction with the Yankees’ win, this AL East race might have one more turn left before Game 162 on Sunday. The Jays have the tiebreaker, but they’re also now only one game ahead of New York, its smallest lead since July 3rd. Worse, they must contend with Garrett Crochet tonight at Rogers Centre with the Red Sox getting closer to securing their own playoff spot. The odds are still not with the Yankees, but this isn’t over yet if New York takes cares of business. The division and a first-round bye remain in play.
Today on the site, Peter will look back on Ben Rice’s excellent 10th-inning grand slam from Sunday for his At-Bat of the Week feature and Matt will have the Rivalry Roundup. Later, he’ll return for the latest edition of the 2000 Yankees Diary and the final win of that team’s turbulent September.
