Rutgers men’s basketball has once again looked on the other side of the pond to round out its roster, as the Scarlet Knights have landed a commitment from Slovenian Forward Martin Tonejc, according to a post made by The Knight Report. This is the second year in a row Rutgers has added talent directly from the European ranks.
Tonejc, who stands at 6-foot-8, last played for Cedevita Olimpija in Slovenia. Tonejc has played in that program for a few years, making progress in the youth ranks, but played sparingly
for the senior club in 2026 as they won their sixth consecutive league championship.
Tonejc averaged 17.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in the 2024-25 season as part of the Adriatic ABA Junior League, where he played three games. He also has an impressive ability to drive to the rim for someone of his size.
This off-season, Rutgers put a substantial effort into revitalizing its front court, adding five players to contribute to that area in particular and eight players overall. According to Brian Fonseca of NJ.com, they aren’t done either. As of right now, the Knights have 14 scholarship spots filled, with one more remaining open. Supposedly, they have been in contact with another international front-court piece that could be the one to fill the last spot on the roster. Rutgers could even end up adding two more players to their roster because of the uncertain situation surrounding Lew Duarte’s eligibility.
Tonejc comes to Rutgers with a full four years of eligibility, despite being 20 years old.
Here is Rutgers’ current roster broken down by years of eligibility
1 year – Tariq Francis-Guard, Rasheed Jones-Guard, Darren Buchanan-Forward, Jamichael Davis- Guard, Darin Buca-Center.
2 years – Darin Smith-forward.
3 years – Lino Mark-guard, Kaden Powers-guard, Will Sydnor-forward, Christian Gurdak-center, Gevonte Ware-center.
4 years – Imahri Wooten- guard, Martin Tonejc- foward.
